CSA Share: Aug. 20

Dear CSA members:

Maybe you have noticed (or maybe you haven’t) the lemon grass growing in our greenhouse. I thought it would be fun to pretend we live in the lush and abundant rain forest by growing tropical foods in our hot, water-controlled greenhouse.

Well, we have successfully planted East Indian lemon grass and will be offering it in your share this week. East Indian is slightly smaller and more pungent than the common West Indian lemon grass. It will be paired quite nicely with all the nightshades (eggplant, tomatoes, peppers) that are starting to make a big debut in your shares.

You will also be getting either Thai or Lime Basil. My favorite thing to make is a coconut milk curry with all of the above ingredients and some corn and string beans. Yummy colorful medley!

August is my favorite time of year and now my favorite month thus far because we finally got a good rainstorm. Let’s hope this is a sign of an “average” late summer. Some of our crops couldn’t take the heat this year, so we have to sadly report that, while we tried, there will be no Added Value celery, sweet potatoes or fava beans.

However, this week will be the largest harvest for CSA so far! — Kristen
