Garlic scapes might sneak into this week’s share. Photo by krossbow on Flickr.
Happy summer solstice! You have to believe it with this heat.
With so many hours of sunlight, things are definitely growing away — it’s hard to keep up! The peas are about as ready as they’re going to get. Sorry for the false alarm last week. There should be enough for everyone this week.
The summer squash, the first of our summer fruits, went from big to small in like 3 days. There’s likely only enough so far for the large shares this week, but everybody get ready for it because it’s going to start coming in droves soon. We’re going to load you up with lettuce this week, but after that there might not be any for awhile. When you get home with it, dunk it into some cold water, dry it, wrap it in damp paper towels and stick it in the crisper. It should last for quite some time.
There will also be plenty of garlic chives. As their name says, these are like regular chives but a bit more garlicky. They are useful for all kinds of things. Sohui, the chef at the Good Fork, gets them to make her famous pork dumplings with. Other things that might be in your share this week: arugula, garlic scapes, scallions, bok choi, tatsoi, turnips, radishes and herbs.
See you all Saturday,
-Shayna
